What is the phone's touch sampling rate?
Also known as the touch refresh rate, the sampling rate can be defined as the number of times a touchscreen can sense input from your finger in a second.
Why does touch sampling rate matter for your phone?
Understanding the touch sampling rate, you may wonder how it affects your experience. Essentially, it is directly related to the responsiveness of your touchscreen. The higher the rate, the better the speed and the less touch lag you will encounter. When the screen refresh rate aligns with the touch sample rate, such as at 60Hz for most phones, both tracking and refreshing intervals occur simultaneously every 16.6ms. This delay in rendering animation presents a potential drawback.
Increasing the sampling frequency to 120Hz for the same panel results in quicker touch tracking (8.3ms) than the time it takes for the display to refresh. This enables rendering the next frame in accordance with the very next screen update, offering a faster and smoother animation commencement. However, it does not provide the same fluidity as high refresh rate panels deliver.
A similar scenario unfolds with phones featuring displays of 120Hz refresh rate. Doubling the touch sampling frequency to 240Hz accelerates response to your actions significantly quicker than the screen updates content from the processor.
What is the Touch Sampling Rate Checker App?
The Touch Sampling Rate Checker is a free application designed to assess a phone's touch panel sampling rate.
What are the phones with high touch sampling rates?
The trend initially emerged in gaming phones like the Asus ROG II (240Hz) and Black Shark 3 (270Hz) to reduce latency during gaming sessions. Nevertheless, higher touch sampling rates have found their way into more mainstream consumer devices such as Galaxy S20 (240Hz), Mi 10 Pro (180Hz), Realme X50 Pro (180Hz), Realme 6 Pro (120Hz), among others. It is anticipated that an increasing number of Android devices will adopt higher touch sampling rates in the near future.
